About Us

picture of Peter and Virginia Sargent

Hi, we are Peter and Virginia Sargent. When the local ranch where Peter worked unexpectedly had to move and sell their herd, our 10-year plan to start our own regenerative ranch operation become an overnight reality in May 2024. We started the wild adventure of building fence, adding livestock guardian dogs (Moose and Ellie) to our mix, digging irrigation ditches, figuring out daily ranch chores, healing from a whole lot of mosquitos bites and strained back muscles, and marveling in our new life with two young kids and hundreds of animals under our wing. Somewhere in there, we processed and sold our first batch of Longroots Ranch lambs.

We're passionate about regenerative practices to heal the soil, capture carbon, and provide nutritious and healthy food for our community. And we're grateful to work and learn alongside our ranch manager, Caelyn Hammett.

Our Approach

Regenerative

Practices

Solar

Grazing

Grass-fed

Meat

We raise animals using regenerative practices, such as rotational grazing, to build up healthy soil, sequester carbon, and work with the ecosystem. Our animals spend time grazing at our home ranch in Longmont, Colorado, and on nearby leased land.  They also graze under a large solar array (referred to as "agrovolatics") in Niwot, Colorado, which helps rebuild the soil on those 70-acres and replaces carbon-intensive mowing with regenerative food production -- a true win-win. Come see for yourself!
